You need to contact Aylesbury County Council in the summer of school year 5 to register your child. You will then be sent an information pack containing a more formal exam registration form and some example exam papers. The address is: The Admissions Team, Aylesbury County Council, Walton Street, Aylesbury, HP20 1UA. Tel: 01296 383250.
The 11+ exams are sat in October of school year 6. If your child’s school is in Buckinghamshire but outside the Milton Keynes area, the exams will be taken during the school day. Most schools in Milton Keynes do not offer the chance to take the test at school, in which case you need to inform Aylesbury and arrangements will be made to sit the exams in a centre in that town, usually in the October half term.
There are two examinations, both in verbal reasoning, and your child has to pass one of them to be considered for a place in grammar school.
We offer extensive practice in the question types and techniques required to see success in the 11+ and 12+ grammar school entrance examinations. These skills are incorporated into a student’s study programme and are supplemented with exercises intended to broaden a student’s vocabulary and maths skills, both common stumbling blocks.
For borderline students in particular, we advise an early start to studies of a year at least, starting in year 5 for the exam in October of year 6.
As well as normal, weekly sessions, we offer several intensive courses over the school summer holidays. These are particularly popular with those students seeking a boost to their regular studies or those who have left the decision to enter the exam rather late.
A typical 11+ programme will include:
- Learning and practising the techniques for a particular question type.
- Vocabulary building.
- Words puzzle sheet to increase word knowledge.
- Mental maths to improve speed.
- General maths skills to enhance logical thought.
- Word games for antonym, synonym, and homophone recognition.
11+ books:
We have some books that parents can buy at cost. We can also advise on which other books will be helpful for exam preparation.
Touch-typing
We have written a unique program of study, for students of all ages, which follows the popular ‘Ten Thumbs’ touch-typing course.
Students are advised that they will need a computer running at least Windows XP Home in order to run the CDROM provided with the course, and which needs to be used for homework practice.
